Stratobowl Rim Trail 

Until the 1930s, the natural limestone bowl outside of Rapid City, South Dakota was known as “Moonlight Valley.” Surrounded by 400-foot cliffs on three sides, the bowl made a perfect location for hydrogen and helium balloon experiments. 

In November of 1934, Captain Albert Stevens ascended in a helium balloon more than 70,000 feet and snapped the first picture to show the curvature of the Earth. Since then, the location has been known as the Stratobowl. 

The Stratobowl Rim Trail is an easy, 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that leads to an overlook of the Stratobowl. The trail is wide and well-maintained, making it a perfect stop for families as they explore the Black Hills.
