Family-Friendly Hikes in the Black Hills

Lace up your hiking boots and embark on exhilarating adventures through the Black Hills' stunning natural landscapes. Here are three of our favorite trails.

Roughlock Falls Trail

Roughlock Falls is arguably the most photographed spot in the Black Hills, and for good reason. Little Spearfish Creek has carved a striking 50-foot chasm through the limestone, creating Roughlock Falls.

The
Roughlock Falls Trail, spanning a mile through Spearfish Canyon, guides you to the falls, taking about an hour to complete. The trail is also dog-friendly, making it a practical and enjoyable outing for families and nature enthusiasts alike.

Buzzards Roost

Buzzard's Roost Trail is a fantastic option for families and young hikers. With its easy-to-follow route, stunning views, and abundance of wildlife, this 2.8-mile loop trail is sure to please everyone in your group.

The trail starts at the Buzzard's Roost Trailhead, located just a short drive from Rapid City. From there, the path winds gently uphill through a forest of ponderosa pines and juniper trees. Along the way, you'll catch glimpses of the surrounding hills and valleys, as well as occasional views of Rapid City in the distance.

Stratobowl Rim Trail

Until the 1930s, the natural limestone bowl outside of Rapid City, South Dakota was known as “Moonlight Valley.” Surrounded by 400-foot cliffs on three sides, the bowl made a perfect location for hydrogen and helium balloon experiments.

In November of 1934, Captain Albert Stevens ascended in a helium balloon more than 70,000 feet and snapped the first picture to show the curvature of the Earth. Since then, the location has been known as the Stratobowl.

The
Stratobowl Rim Trail is an easy, 1.7-mile out-and-back trail that leads to an overlook of the Stratobowl. The trail is wide and well-maintained, making it a perfect stop for families as they explore the Black Hills.
